Happy Days in Dixie is an early Mills march and is somewhat unusual in having a brief one-verse vocal right slap in the middle of the composition. Its happy whistling melodies are very reminiscent of Whistling Rufus and should make no problems even for beginners.
The piece opens with a "whistled" 4-bar introduction followed by a light-hearted 36-bar 1st section. The second section is repeated, comprises 16 bars and may be sung to. The initial theme is returned to as a passage to the final trio. The rhythm section should go lightly on the "umphing" allowing the delicacy of this musical gem to be appreciated.
A tempo of 85 crotchets/min. is suggested.
