An unusual composition, it appears that Mills intended this characteristic piece to be played by piano requiring such piano playing skills that the imitation of a banjo is achieved. Did someone lose their banjo one wonders? Well of course, in this adaptation for recorder, similar recorder playing skills are necessary to achieve the same object. The piece is a bright and happy affair in AABBACCBB form with a 4-bar introduction and an 8-bar interlude between the CC and BB strains. The A and C strains have an unusual 8-bar length. The melodies, all of a distinct folksy character, are shared between the 1st tenor and treble. The basses have some say in the interlude. All in all a piece of fun to be taken light-heartedly - that the composer scored the A-strain as mf a la banjo should be noted!
A tempo of 120 crotchets/min. is suggested.
