"North Americay" is another song that Wilfried Drygala, who was also a military buff, gave me a faded photocopy of work out an arrangement for the "Idle Fellows" and was not then used. I sometimes sing it for my own pleasure.
It is similar type of song as The Banks of the Nile where it can be said to be a typical period piece of departure for the wars where the sweetheart is not allowed to go due to dangers and climate. The verse with "We marched out of Plymouth ..... pretty girls from the streets come running down" is especially evocative for me when I remember sailing from Plymouth into the Atlantic and to Londonderry several times whilst serving on H.M.S. Lofoten in 1964.
