"Side by side" is a short two verse song which was often sung when I was in the Royal Navy. Only a few people ever knew the just two verses but everyone could join in the chorus:
"Oh, we ain't got a barrel of money, maybe we're ragged and funny
But we'll travel along, singing a song, side by side"
Perhaps it was so popular because it reflected and reminded us of our generally impecunious state! The version that I now sing can be found in 101 Pub Favourites for Buskers.
